In this week’s video, I share a quick explanation of the new health and safety attributes in Google My Business and walk you through how to set them up. They’ve been rolled out for retail, food, and service industries, and they help potential customers see COVID-related safety information when they find you online.

Welcome back to another episode of Local Search Tuesdays. This week, I’m going to talk about the new health and safety attributes for Google My Business.

Last year, Google released a crazy amount of updates to Google My Business to help share more information about businesses during the COVID pandemic and nationwide lockdowns. Many of these were released without much fanfare, so most business owners don’t even know they exist.

Google added the attributes section to Google My Business profiles a few years ago. Businesses could select attributes like “wi-fi available” or “wheelchair accessible” that would show up on their GMB listing. The attributes available for selection depend on what sort of business you are, or more specifically, they depend on what you’ve selected as your primary category in Google My Business.

If Google decides to show the attributes on your listing, you’ll see a few highlights, but when you click the arrow, it will expand to show everything that you’ve selected.

In September, the new health and safety attributes were added in for retail, food, and service industries. There’s no concrete definition of which businesses are in those categories, so if you’re not sure if you’re in there, you’ll need to log into your dashboard and check.

If you’ve got them available, the new health and safety attributes are:

  • Appointment required
  • Mask required
  • Staff get temperature checks
  • Staff required to disinfect surfaces between visits
  • Staff wear masks
  • Temperature check required

As with the standard business attributes, you simply select the ones that apply and they’ll potentially appear in your GMB listing.

To check if they’re available, or to add them if you’ve got them:

  1. Log into your GMB dashboard
  2. Click info
  3. Under highlights, click pencil next to “from the business”
  4. Select the attributes that apply

And then you’re all set. Now you know how to set the new health and safety attributes if your business has them available.

That’s all the time we’ve got for this week’s video, so now it’s that time.
