Welcome back to another episode of Local Search Tuesdays. This week, I’m going to share a quick tip to help you figure out if content is unique – or duplicate content that won’t help.

Most marketers misinterpret the whole duplicate content thing – there’s actually not a penalty for duplicate content. Google rewards unique content, so if you’ve got duplicate content, it simply doesn’t do anything for you. Duplicate content is basically like an evil twin that’s lazy…

Hey now – let’s not badmouth evil twins here.

Oh hey – it’s my not-so-evil twin Giff. Hey man, it’s been a while.

Yeah, I’ve been busy, man. The new Zelda game came out and all…

Been missing you, buddy. It’s not always easy to find you.

Then I guess it’s good that you’re sharing a tip for easily finding duplicates today, right?

Yeah, exactly!

So now that he’s back to playing his Switch, let’s talk about this week’s tip. Sure, there are tons of duplicate content detection tools out there, but my favorite method is really quite simple.

Copy a phrase from the content on the page you’re checking. Make sure it doesn’t include anything unique like the business name or city.

Then, just go to Google and do a search for that phrase inside of double quotes. Searching with double quotes forces Google to only return exact matches for the phrase. You should only see the page you’re analyzing as a result. If you see multiple sites, then you know it’s duplicate content and you’ve got some work to do.

And that simple tip is all I’ve got for you this week, so you know what that means.

We totally just high-fived ‘cause you learned something awesome.
Thanks for watching, and we’ll see you again next week for another episode of Local Search Tuesdays.
